How the calculation works

You get half a week’s pay for each full year you were under 22, one week’s pay for each full year you were 22 or older but under 41, and one and a half weeks’ pay for each full year you were 41 or older. Sources: GOV.UK, ERA 1996 s.162

Years are counted back from the redundancy date, and only complete years count. A year is counted at a higher rate only if you had reached that age for the whole of that year — so being 41 on your redundancy date does not turn all your years into 1.5-week years. Source: ERA 1996 s.162

Your period of employment starts with your first day of work and ends with the redundancy date, including both days. Source: ERA 1996 s.211

Length of service is capped at 20 years. Source: GOV.UK If you were made redundant on or after 6 April 2026, weekly pay is capped at £751 and the maximum statutory redundancy pay is £22,530 in England, Wales and Scotland. Source: GOV.UK In Northern Ireland the maximum weekly amount is £783 and the maximum total is £23,490. Source: nidirect

Leap-day birthdays: if you were born on 29 February, this calculator treats your birthday as 1 March in years that are not leap years.

Questions people ask

How is statutory redundancy pay calculated?

Each complete year of service, counted back from the redundancy date, earns half a week’s pay if you were under 22 for that year, one week’s pay if you were 22 to 40, and one and a half weeks’ pay if you were 41 or older. The total weeks are multiplied by your weekly pay, up to the statutory weekly cap.

How many years of service count?

A maximum of 20 years. If you have worked longer, only the most recent 20 complete years are used.

Sources: nidirect, ERA s.162

What if I have worked for my employer for less than 2 years?

You normally need 2 years or more with your current employer to be entitled to statutory redundancy pay. There can be circumstances and exceptions that this calculator does not assess, and you may still have other employment rights.

Can I get more than the amount shown?
