Check a company

Want to know if a particular employer uses E-Verify? Only the government's own search can tell you. Type the company name, copy it, then search the official list.

Search tips

  • Try the company's legal name and its trade name. Employers enroll under the name they choose, often the legal one.
  • Search the parent company and each subsidiary separately.
  • A company you can't find may still be enrolled. The list only includes employers that reported 5 or more employees.
  • Job seekers on STEM OPT: ask the employer for its E-Verify company ID. It is the surest check.
  • Want to check your own work eligibility? Use the government's free myE-Verify Self Check.

Federal rules that apply in every state

  • Federal contractors. Federal contracts worth more than $150,000 and lasting 120 days or more usually include FAR clause 52.222-54. If yours does, you must enroll within 30 days of the award and verify new hires and the employees assigned to the contract. The clause also flows down to subcontracts over $3,500 for services or construction. FAR 52.222-54
  • STEM OPT students. An employer of an F-1 student on the 24-month STEM OPT extension must be enrolled in E-Verify and in good standing. 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(C)
  • Form I-9 for everyone. Every employer must complete Form I-9 for each new hire, whether or not it uses E-Verify. e-verify.gov

What changed in 2026

  • Tennessee: employers with 1 to 34 employees must use E-Verify or keep document copies (Public Chapter 622).
  • Missouri: contractor rule amended. The over-$5,000 threshold is unchanged.
  • Tennessee: state and local government employers must E-Verify all new hires.
  • Iowa: state departments, schools, counties and cities must E-Verify new hires.

  • Ohio: nonresidential construction employers must E-Verify workers on Ohio projects.
  • Arkansas: state agencies and local governments must E-Verify new hires.

Several 2026 bills to widen E-Verify did not become law, including Florida HB 197 (all employers), Utah HB 294, South Dakota HB 1209, Idaho SB 1247 and West Virginia HB 4198.

Frequently asked questions

Does Michigan require E-Verify?

No. Michigan does not require private employers to use E-Verify. Some government employers must use it.

Do Michigan government contractors need E-Verify?

We found no Michigan law that makes E-Verify a condition of a state or local contract, as of October 16, 2026. Federal contracts with FAR clause 52.222-54 still require it in every state.

Is E-Verify mandatory for private employers?

Not under federal law for most private employers. It becomes mandatory through state law, through a federal contract with FAR clause 52.222-54, or when you employ a STEM OPT student. Alabama, Arizona, Mississippi and South Carolina require it of every employer; Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Utah from a set number of employees.

Is E-Verify the same as Form I-9?

No. Form I-9 is the paper or electronic form every employer completes for each new hire. E-Verify is a separate online check that compares the Form I-9 information with Social Security and Homeland Security records.

Can I use E-Verify to screen job applicants?

No. You create an E-Verify case only after the person has accepted a job offer and completed Form I-9. California and Illinois add their own penalties for checking applicants before an offer.

Can I check my existing employees?

Generally no. E-Verify is for new hires. Federal contractors with FAR clause 52.222-54 may choose to verify their whole existing workforce, and California bans checking current employees unless federal law requires it.

My state isn't on the “required” list. Should I still use E-Verify?

That is your choice. E-Verify is free and gives a quick answer on work authorization, and in some states, such as Louisiana and Indiana, using it protects you if a worker turns out not to be authorized. It also adds steps: posters, case deadlines and rules on how you treat a tentative nonconfirmation.

Does MadyHR.ai run E-Verify for me?

No. MadyHR.ai is not an E-Verify employer agent and does not create E-Verify cases. You enroll and run cases yourself on e-verify.gov.

Is my information saved?

No. The checker works entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to MadyHR.ai or stored.
