About the minimum wage

What is the minimum wage?

The minimum wage is the lowest hourly rate an employer may pay a covered, non-exempt employee. In the United States it can be set at three levels: federal, state and local.

Federal minimum wage

The federal minimum wage under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is $7.25 per hour. It applies to employers and employees covered by the FLSA, which includes most businesses with $500,000 or more in annual sales and many others.

State and local minimum wages

Many states set a higher rate. Some cities and counties set a rate above their state's. Where more than one applies, employers generally must pay the highest applicable rate. A few states have no minimum wage law, or a rate below $7.25 — in those states, FLSA-covered employers pay the federal rate.

Why rates can differ within a state

Rates can depend on location (for example New York City versus the rest of New York, or Oregon's three rate areas), employer size or annual sales (for example Ohio, Montana and New Jersey), employee type (tipped staff, minors, students, trainees) and the date, because many states adjust rates each year.

How to use the calculator

Select your state, answer any follow-up questions that appear, choose the date you are checking and, if you like, enter an hourly wage to compare. The calculator only asks what that state's rules need.

How the result is worked out

The calculator reads a structured table of rates taken from the U.S. Department of Labor and, where noted, official state sources. It applies the state's rules to your answers, compares the result with the federal rate where federal law applies, and shows the rate used, why, and the source. It covers dates from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026; other dates are not estimated.

Always check the official source

Minimum wage laws change and have exceptions this tool doesn't cover, including local ordinances, tipped and youth rates, and industry rules. Use the result as a starting point and confirm important decisions with the state labor department, the U.S. Department of Labor or a qualified professional.
