How it works

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year

Weekly pay = hourly rate × hours per week

Monthly = annual ÷ 12 · Semimonthly = annual ÷ 24 · Biweekly = annual ÷ 26

The weekly figure is what you earn in a week you work. Monthly, semimonthly and biweekly figures spread your annual pay evenly across the year. If you're paid for all 52 weeks, biweekly pay is exactly two weeks of pay. If some weeks are unpaid, it's an average.

A common shortcut is to multiply an hourly rate by 2,080, which is 40 hours × 52 weeks. The Bureau of Labor Statistics uses the same 2,080-hour figure when it converts hourly wages to annual wages in its occupational wage data. It's a convention, not a legal rule, so this calculator lets you use your own hours.

Worked example

Maria earns $18.50 an hour, works 32 hours a week, and takes two unpaid weeks off each year, so she's paid for 50 weeks.

StepResult
Weekly pay: $18.50 × 32$592.00
Annual salary: $592.00 × 50$29,600.00
Monthly: $29,600.00 ÷ 12$2,466.67
Biweekly (averaged): $29,600.00 ÷ 26$1,138.46

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the number of weeks you're paid each year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, that's your hourly rate × 2,080.

Is 2,080 hours the official number of work hours in a year?

No. There's no single legal number. The Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act doesn't define full-time or part-time work, and that it's generally up to the employer. The Bureau of Labor Statistics uses 2,080 hours as a convention for its annual wage estimates. Use your own schedule for an accurate answer.

Does this include overtime?

No. Enter your regular hours only. If you work overtime, use our Work Hours Calculator, which can apply the federal overtime rule. Under federal law, covered nonexempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states have their own overtime rules.

Is the result before or after tax?

Before tax. These are gross pay figures. Federal, state and local taxes and any deductions, such as health insurance or retirement contributions, aren't taken out.

What's the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly means every two weeks, which gives 26 paychecks in most years. Semimonthly means twice a month, often on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day, which gives 24 paychecks. A semimonthly paycheck is slightly larger because the same annual pay is split into fewer payments.

Why do some years have 27 biweekly paydays?

A year has 52 weeks plus one extra day, or two in a leap year. Those extra days add up, so a biweekly schedule occasionally lands 27 paydays in a calendar year. This calculator spreads annual pay over the standard 26 periods.

Should I include paid vacation weeks?

Yes, if you're paid for them. Paid weeks per year means every week you receive pay, including paid vacation and holidays. Leave out only the weeks you're not paid.
