How to use this calculator

  1. Enter a pay amount and choose how often it's paid.
  2. Add hours per week to see an hourly rate, and days per week to see a daily rate. If your pay is hourly or daily, these are required.
  3. Select Calculate to see every pay period side by side.

How it works

The calculator turns your pay into a yearly figure, then divides that into each pay period.

Annual = pay × periods per year

Each period = annual ÷ periods per year

Hourly = annual ÷ (hours per week × 52) · Daily = annual ÷ (days per week × 52)

Pay periodPeriods per year
Weekly52
Biweekly (every two weeks)26
Semimonthly (twice a month)24
Monthly12
Quarterly4
Yearly1

These are the same pay-period counts used in the IRS withholding tables in Publication 15-T. The calculator assumes pay for all 52 weeks of the year. If some weeks are unpaid, use our Hourly to Salary Calculator, which lets you set paid weeks.

Worked example

Priya is paid $4,500 a month and works 40 hours a week, five days a week.

Daily: $54,000 ÷ (5 × 52)$207.69
Hourly: $54,000 ÷ (40 × 52)$25.96

Frequently asked questions

How many pay periods are there in a year?

52 for weekly pay, 26 for biweekly, 24 for semimonthly, 12 for monthly and 4 for quarterly. Biweekly schedules occasionally have 27 paydays in a calendar year, because a year is slightly longer than 52 weeks.

Is semimonthly the same as biweekly?

No. Semimonthly is twice a month, or 24 paychecks. Biweekly is every two weeks, usually 26 paychecks. The same salary gives a slightly larger semimonthly paycheck.

Why does monthly pay ÷ 4 not equal weekly pay?

Because a month is longer than four weeks. On average a month has about 4.33 weeks (52 ÷ 12). To convert monthly pay to weekly pay accurately, multiply by 12 and divide by 52.

How is the daily rate calculated?

Annual pay divided by the days you work in a year, which is days per week × 52. It doesn't remove paid holidays, so it's your pay per paid day.

Are these figures before tax?

Yes. Every figure is gross pay before taxes and deductions.
