Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)
Rate per hour worked = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × (paid weeks − paid weeks off))
The first figure is your pay for every paid hour, the way an employer or a job ad would usually state it. The second answers a different question: since paid vacation and holidays are paid but not worked, how much do you earn for each hour you're actually on the job?
The calculator shows the rounded rate and the unrounded value, so you can see exactly where any cents come from.
James is offered $65,000 a year for 37.5 hours a week. He gets three weeks of vacation and five paid holidays, which is four weeks in total.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Paid hours a year: 37.5 × 52 | 1,950 |
| Hourly rate: $65,000 ÷ 1,950 | $33.33 |
| Hours actually worked: 37.5 × (52 − 4) | 1,800 |
| Rate per hour worked: $65,000 ÷ 1,800 | $36.11 |
Divide your annual salary by the number of hours you're paid in a year. For 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, divide by 2,080. A $50,000 salary works out to about $24.04 an hour.
Paid vacation and holidays are paid but not worked. Spreading the same salary over fewer working hours gives a higher figure per hour actually worked. It's a useful way to compare job offers with different amounts of paid time off.
Not automatically. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, exemption generally depends on your job duties and on being paid on a salary basis at or above a minimum level. See the Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #17A for the details. This calculator doesn't decide exemption status.
Before tax. All figures are gross pay, before federal, state and local taxes and any deductions.
Usually, yes. Most salaried employees are paid every week of the year, including weeks of paid time off. Use fewer only if you have unpaid weeks, such as an unpaid summer break.
If you entered fewer than 52 paid weeks, biweekly, semimonthly and monthly amounts spread your annual salary evenly across the year, so they're averages. With 52 paid weeks, biweekly pay is exactly two weeks of pay.
This calculator is arithmetic only. It doesn't use tax tables or government wage data. The official pages below explain the conventions mentioned on this page.
